by Steve Stanganelli,CFP®, CRPC®

As we prepare to enter a new season, I wanted to personally inform you of some changes both professionally and personally.

Many subscribers of this newsletter will notice that there has been a change with the logo and contact information.

Recently, I merged my practice and joined the team at Quest Financial Services, Inc., a Lynnfield-based fee-only Registered Investment Advisor.

Why the change? Opportunity … for my clients, my professional career and my family.

First Comes Love, Then Comes Marriage …
And Baby Makes Three
by Steve Stanganelli,CFP®, CRPC®

For regular readers of this newsletter, this is a bit of a departure from my typical articles.

For those of you who I’ve not seen in a while, this news could be shocking … so please sit down. I wouldn’t want you to get hurt.

Many of you know that I married my best friend on May 25, 2008. And after a whirlwind tour of Italy, we settled in Amesbury. Since then Kristin has turned my house into our home.

Like most newlyweds it’s been a period of adjustment. New jobs, house projects, closets rearranged, furniture moved, holidays with the in-laws.

And now we are expecting a new adjustment.

Soon a stork is scheduled to arrive with a special delivery… very soon.

Sometime in September, we will officially be part of the “Sandwich Generation” caring for elder parents and juggling careers with the challenges of a newborn babe.

Some of you have expressed your best wishes. And we thank you. We’ve also heard and will try to heed the advice offered by others. We know that life as we know it will never be the same.

C’est la vie. Que Sera Sera.

Now, I want to thank my loyal readers with a special contest. Believe it or not, we do not know our new arrival’s gender.

So please join our little contest to welcome our new arrival. Send me an email at steve@questfsi.com with your guess for the date of birth, gender and weight.

The person who correctly guesses the date of birth will be rewarded with a $50 VISA gift card.

The person who is closest with the weight will be rewarded with a $25 VISA gift card.

And for the first five who correctly guess the gender, there are Dunkin Donuts gift cards.

For all who participate, I will send you a copy of the ebook Retire in a Weekend to help you stay on track.

While you’re at it, we’re still working on possible names. So all suggestions will also be appreciated as well.

The mom-to-be is doing well. The “daddy in training” has completed his classes. (We’ll see how much he remembers soon enough). The nest is set. Now it’s just a matter of time.

I hope to have an announcement of our arrival … and the correct predictions … by the time the next newsletter is sent out in September.

All the best.

Develop a Tax-Planning Mentality
Many people confuse tax planning with tax preparation and only think about the subject when preparing their annual tax return. However, there is little you can do to actually lower your bill when preparing your return. If your goal is to reduce income taxes, you need to be aware of tax-planning opportunities throughout the year.

Reduced Planning Opportunities for Vacation Homes
In the past, it was possible to turn a vacation home or rental home into your principal residence so that you could later sell it and exclude gains on the sale from income. If you were planning on such a strategy, be aware that the tax rules recently changed.

The Case for GRATs
The lifetime gift tax exclusion is $1,000,000, but is not scheduled to increase in the future. If you'd like to pass on more than $1,000,000 to your heirs before your death but don't want to pay gift taxes, you may want to take a look at grantor retained annuity trusts (GRATs).
